Beyond creation - Earthborn evolution ~ Album review

Before I start talking about this album, I would like to mention that Canada has some serious progressive and technical death metal bands! They started to appear more and more lately and every time I listen to one of these bands: IT BLOWS MY MIND!!

Beyond creation has always been that kind of bands we rarely come across! (if you're a prog/tech fan and you don't know the band then what are doing with your life? Seriously!) Since their first appearance the band hasn't ceased blowing our minds!
Beyond creation are known for being very unique, and very strict in what they do! They pay attention to every detail in their compositions, I think they wouldn't have been able to do that if they weren't all skilled! I mean, EVERY MEMBER OF THE BAND IS TALENTED... really talented, which is also rare! And this was clearly remarkable in their successful debut album "the aura" released in 2011! The band kept that complex technical aspect and added more progressive to come up with a new masterpiece "EARTHBORN EVOLUTION".
From what I counted, I listened to the album over 10 times (and yes, I'll be listening to it more) because it's indeed an album that will never make you feel bored, it's simply addictive!

The more I listen to it, the more I discover awesome stuff in those complex technical lines! Simon and Kevin did a great job the riffs are incredible while the vocals are so catchy... strong deep growls and hell! What a devastating drum by Philippe! Knowing that this is his first album with the band!
And you can't talk about Beyond creation without mentioning the bass-hero Dominic "Forest", I have to stand in recognition of that man! His bass lines are very unique and creative (you gotta check Elusive Psychological Reverence to see what I'm talking about)! With his fretless 6 string bass he makes me think about many great bass-players especially that nowadays there is kinda a lack of creativity (particularly in terms of bass) but FOREST IS A MASTER, so are the rest of the band members!

In general the album is a piece of art, if I have to write about each song I'd write a novel! You tech/prog fans must check this album and believe me IF CHUCK SCHULDINER WAS STILL ALIVE HE'D BE PROUD OF THESE GUYS!
This album should be one of the best 2014 releases!!

Interview with Mario from Devangelic

- First of all ,thank you for the interview! "Devangelic" is a brutal death metal band from Italy! tell me more about the band!

Hi, thank you for having us! As you said we play brutal death metal and we are from Italy, our main influences are Gorgasm, Disgorge and Condemned among many other legendary names in the BDM scene!

- After the promo of 2012 the band got the opportunity to sign a deal with "Comatose music" in 2013 to release later its first full length album "Resurrection Denied" earlier this year! Talk to me more about this album and about this move!

Yeah, we got a very good deal with Steve of Comatose Music and we're very glad he believed in us since the beginning. Our efforts has been well rewarded as the first press of the album sold out just with preorders and the US tour and we got an outstanding feedback from the webzines, insiders and especially from the fans around. We're definitely satisfied for it, but it's just the beginning!

- What does the lyrics deal with?

Our lyrics focus on potray the disgusting things that the Catholicism, among other religions, brought in our society. We come from the "holy" city of Rome, so we live and see those things everyday, it came naturally to us to write about that.

- Are you satisfied with the feedback so far?

As I said before, we're definitely satisfied about it!

- "Devangelic", How did you come up with the band name?

We wanted a name who could result fresh and even a little bit catchy and not to hard to remember!

- What do you think about metal scene in Italy? we see that many great italian bands appeared lately!

Yeah, it's a great thing indeed! There are a lot of great bands here and it's awesome to see that everyone is helping each other out with no jealousy. There are always exceptions on that, but I prefer to not to think about em and keep concentrate to the great things happening in the scene!

- what's your favorite Italian band?

Personally I like so many ITDM bands, my most favorite are Hour Of Penance, Septycal Gorge, Bloodtruth, Antropofagus, Putridity and Vulvectomy.

- Tell me more about your news and upcoming events! and I also noticed you're creating new merch!

We're putting out a bunch of new stuff, new shirt designs and hoodies, and you can find everything online on our store http://www.devangelic.bigcartel.com/ For the next moves, we're starting the writing process of the new album and we're going to play in London on May 22nd along with many great bands, and many other news are coming next!

- Thank you again! Anything else you would like to add?

Thanks again for having us and keep your great work up! Just want to remember to everyone to follow us on facebook to be updated on the band's activity at this link https://www.facebook.com/devangelic.official

Cheers!

Martin Le Gall - Pop redemption~ Film review

You hesitate between a movie about Metal and a comedy one? why not both?

Differently to any metal movie you know , Pop redemption is a comedy masterpiece about Dead MaKabés , a black metal band who tend to finish before it starts!

After 15 years of existence without any achievement, three of the members are thinking about leaving the band for family reason while the fourth is completely tenacious! Alex the vocalist of the band who's taking it too seriously got a call from Hellfest (One of the biggest festivals of extreme music in Europe) to replace a canceled band! Alex, JP, Pascal & Erik decided to take this opportunity. And this is where the story begins...
It took one little mistake on their road to Hellfest to make them change everything!
From guest in a metal festival to accused of murder! The band had to hide in a little village to realize later that there's a strawberry festival over there! The only way to escape? is to replace the pop band "All we need is love" knowing that pop is the most hated kind by Alex!

After that Alexander refused to play that kind on stage and left, his bandmates got arrested! Fortunately, the officer's daughter is a metal chick. So she helped them (with her mom) to escape, go to Hellfest and finally play there.
What about the disbanding? No...they totally forgot about it and decided to learn from their mistakes and continue as a band!

The movie in general is enjoyable! Not even one scene makes you feel bored or like you want to skip it! the comedy is strongly present, although Alex's case is kinda dramatic if you see it from another facade... I think I don't have anything else to add about this movie except : IT IS A MUST WATCH!

Ragnar Bragason - Metalhead ~ Film review

Metal... one of the darkest and most revolutionary cultures and music of all the time! Coming up from the deserted reality, from the roots of our deepest thoughts and feelings! People enter into that world when they find their souls in it! When they realize that it's the only thing that will understand them and express all what they feel inside... those feelings that might turn into a revolution and revenge later against all those who denied the reality... That's totally what happened to "Hera Karlsdottir" who decided to take up her brother's character and to become a metalhead after attending his horrible death! In fact, this event had a negative impact on the whole family. And by trying to avoid discussing it, the wound remains open in Hera's heart, what made her later take many bad decisions , she was actually kinda lost!

After the appearance of the black metal, corpse paints and  the string of Norwegian church burnings in early 90's, Hera decided to support this movement! Many events happened then, including recording a black metal demo with her own grunts coming up from the bottom of her heart, which will later fall into the hands of a black metal band members, but that was after that she got engaged to her childhood best friend "Knutur"!

This film is striking with a happy conclusion!! I know that most of metalheads are a little bit against "dramatic metal movies" but this one if different...  it treats some issues that every metalhead and every youth might face! Hera could be me , Hera could be you ... she could be every metalhead revolting against the world around him! Who tried once to reconcile with society, but that seems like it won't work! Hera overpasses everything and...BACK TO BLACK!

METALHEAD is scheduled for U.S. release in late January, 2015!
All I can say is that it's a film that deserves more attention... It's a must watch!!

Interview with Sotiris from Septicflesh

1-First of all thank you for your precious time and welcome to metalitty webzine! So let's start by a little biography of the band

- We hail from Greece and we are on the metal scene for quite a long time, from 1990. Until now we have released 9 full length albums: Mystic Places of Dawn (1994), Esoptron (1995), The Ophidian Wheel (1997), A Fallen Temple (1998), Revolution DNA (1999), Sumerian Daemons (2003), Communion (2008), The Great Mass (2011) and Titan (2014).

2-You just released you 9th full length-album entitled TITAN, can you talk to me about this masterpiece ?

-I think the title of the album, describes well its musical content. Considering the production, we worked for the first time with Logan Mader (ex-Machine Head guitarist) as we were impressed from his work with bands as Fear Factory, Cavalera Conspiracy, Gojira, W.A.S.P etc. About the symphonic parts, once again we collaborated with the Fimharmonic orchestra of Prague.

3-what's the concept and the message behind the artwork cover?

- The cover is intentionally minimal avoiding many distracting elements on the background, focusing on the main protagonists. The main figures display an intense bipolarity, provoking second thoughts about what actually is taking place on the scene.  After a long gaze at the picture the roles between them change to opposite directions. Is it really a lamb lying on the floor, or a masked predator disguised as a lamb (take notice of the wolf teeth...)? Is the vague humanoid form what it initially seems to be, or something else? And there is much more, mind blowing and thought provoking artwork inside the album.

4- What do the lyrics deal with?

- There is a variety of themes on “Titan” and each song can stand out on its own story. However, some songs can be interlinked. For example, “Burn” is about the fire of knowledge and therefore can be connected the song Prometheus that refers to the specific Titan that gave the secret knowledge of fire to man. Also “Ground Zero”, besides telling a story of annihilation in a dark poetic way, is also actually setting the post-apocalyptic environment for the final song of the album “the First Immortal”.
5-According to you, which is more difficult: Writing lyrics or composing music?

-  Both pose their challenges and demand a lot of time and effort. Actually, I work both in a parallel way as I want to provide to the audience the most appropriate “images” and emotions, in alliance with the musical background, created a unified result.

6- What makes TITAN different from other albums ?

- Titan is build upon the most powerful elements that characterize the sound of Septicflesh, while also going one step further. And definitely it is the most homogenous and focused piece of music that we have created so far, having a very intense and specific “aura”. Considering the metal parts, it demonstrates a more blackened death metal attitude, bringing a primeval rage fitting to an album called Titan. There are also more demanding drum rhythms on the songs and more challenging classical orchestrations. Finally, considering the vocals, besides the normal adult choir that we are using, we utilized for the first time a complete children’s choir bringing a “spooky” and cinematic sensation to the songs.

7- Are you planning in making a video for one of the album songs?

-  Yes, we want to make a video-clip but for the time being we are focused on touring. So probably if all goes well, we will manage to do it at the beginning of the next year, as we want to have time to focus on it, in order to create something visually enchanting and not just rush on it.

8-The band was formed in 1990 and split in 2003 then reunited in 2007 right? Do you think the band changed after 20 years of existence?

- There was a continuous evolution, while the core identity of the band was always present. Surely, we were never afraid to experiment and push our boundaries. That is one of the main characteristics of Septicflesh. We have developed a very distinct musical identity, a specific musical portal to strange mystical worlds.

9-you're just back from a tour with the Italian band Fleshgod apocalypse tell me more about that tour , and septicflesh news and upcoming events.

-We are like brothers with Fleshgod Apocalypse. They are great to work with and of course great musicians. So it is always fun touring together. The latest USA tour this Summer, was very successful. Next week we will return on USA, this time following the “In the Minds of Evil” North American tour of Deicide.

10-Thank you again, and is there anything else you would like to add?

Stand tall as Titans.

Interview with Giulio from Hour Of Penance

The Italian emperors of Tech death metal "Hour Of Penance" are back again with another masterpiece! I had the chance to do an interview with Giulio (Guitars / Backing Vocals) about their new release REGICIDE.

-Let's start by a brief history of "Hour Of Penance".

G : Well it’s very hard to write a “brief” history of the band since everything started now back in 1999 and this year makes 15 year of the band career. Let’s just say Prosthetic Records just released our sixth album on May 12 worldwide and that we’re going to tour as much as we can to support the album . You can hear the whole album in full on spotify now or on youtube.

- Talk to me a little bit about the new release "REGICIDE"!

G : As i said above , our new and sixth album REGICIDE came out about two weeks ago now , and it’s getting a great feedback so far. We played already a couple of new songs on tour and our fans seems to be very into our new material. Unlikely our old albums.. Regicide features 14 brand new songs that we managed to write in less than a year.

- What makes "regicide" different from your previous albums ?

G: First of all the songwriting , i think we were able to show our fans a different version of Hour of Penance this time without changing too much and staying true to our trademark. We have a new drummer and a new bass player on the album and both did a great job with their instruments , the drum sounds is the most organic and natural we’ve ever had and thanks to the clear production the Bass is not buried under the other instruments. While there’s still a good dose of blast beats we worked more on changing the tempos through the songs and we wrote 3 “slow” songs this time.

- What does "REGICIDE" lyrics deal with? Because from the title and the art work, we can obviously see that they're political!

G : The album art is a snapshot of our culture, where politicians and priests rule the country and control the population. The statue you can see in the middle of the cover art is the statue of Italy, mutilated and raped by those people. They also deal with spiritual growth and freedom of the self from all the boundaries that bind our minds to false dogmas and deceit.

- Who writes the songs?

G : I write the songs and record everything here in my home studio , guitars and drum machine. Then i pass the song when i think it sounds good enough with the structures too and the other guys start working on their parts. Paolo wrote all the lyrics alone this time , in the past i used to take care of that too.

- you just launched a teaser of the music video for "“Reforging The Crown", tell me more about it and its idea!

G : It’s an hard job to make a good death metal music video that somehow is also tied to the lyrics. James came up with the idea for the video which is now online on youtube and you can watch it at :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LkEOqf8U-M
Based on the concept of the album, the video describes the predominance of evil on the church with the priest's nightmare.
After various scenes of obviuous presence of malice in the house of the preacher of Christ, the nightmare materializes crowning first and then killing the priest.

- The drum's techniques in "regicide" are very "striking" and stunning , I would like to know who/what inspired James.

G: James has a different background from us , he can play everything from Jazz to death metal , he knows a lot of techniques as he’s a teacher too , that definitely helped having a more organic drum parts this time as he really worked hard on the new songs.

- You're going to be soon on tour with Septicflesh , Fleshgod Apocalypse and Necronomicon. tell me more about this tour and your upcoming events!

G : It’s going to be fun for sure , we’re also touring in Canada this time for the first time , we’ve never been over there so we’re very excited to play in a new territory. As far as the other events we have booked.. we’re going to tour Australia with the mighty Cannibal Corpse in september and we’re planning to tour in Europe as well to support the new album.

- Thank you again for your time and is there anything else you would like to add ?

G : Thanks a lot for interviewing us ! To the readers.. tune in www.facebook.com/hourofpenance and get our new album REGICIDE !

Meadows end - the sufferwell ~ Album review

It seems like if 2014 is going to be a metal year with all those awesome albums and releases !

Meadows end decided to launch their new album as well in 2014 ; for people who don't know the band , Meadows end a Melodic/Symphonic Death Metal from Sweden formed by 6 members "Johan (The Brute) Brandberg" -Vocals ; "Robin Mattsson" in the Keyboard; the guitarists "Jan Dahlberg" &"Rikard Öqvist" ; the bass player "Mats Helli" and last but not least the drummer "Daniel Tiger".

After their first full-length album "Ode to Quietus" the band rocked again in their second one " The sufferwell" which is going to be released on June 13. Once again , the band members showed their skills in every track of the album.

The sufferwell contains 11 tracks there are a great deal of things to enjoy about each one of them!
The album starts with some awesome keyboard notes just before that the drums and guitars interfere. Johan's brutal voice added an atmospheric touch as well to the song! "Kings Of Greed" is indeed a good opening for the album!

Immediately after it, we find "Trench Of Souls"; This one is for you if you're an "up and down" lover!
"Ur Askan" which mean "From the ashes" in Swedish, is the 3rd song; the keyboard is strongly present! An old school solo to complete the awesomeness!

Then comes "Devil Speed Loathe Kill"; Fast riffs and drum beats, that's what makes it the most powerful song in the album! And yeah, It's a good song to headbang to !
Followed by "Reap"; Magical riffs, melodies and solo ! The melodic death metal is so obvious here! Such an atmospheric track!!

A moment of relaxation & contemplation with "Under A Canopy Of Stars", the only acoustic track; Accompanied with a clean female voice just before we start drowning in the symphonic sea  with "Hung In Gallows By Dawn" , "This Coming Nightfall" and also "Masses Flee"!

the 9th song, "Funeral Of A Porcelain Doll" is a combination of epic riffs and melodies! Yes , that gave birth to an epic atmosphere indeed!
And we finish our journey with "Insurrection" ,a mix of grunt and clean male voice; such a nice epilogue to the album!

In general, "The sufferwell" is another album that confirms that Swedish bands rock!! It's an album that might satisfy different tastes, all the members showed their skills and  I can admit that you can listen to it several times without getting bored of it!

The sufferwell is different from Ode to Quietus, each one is epic in its way though!
I can distinctly notice the band's improvement and that's what makes me expect a better stuff on the next album!
And please note this: This album is going to be one of the best albums in 2014!!

Analgesia - Saint Dreamers ~ Album review

Analgesia
, a symphonic metal band that raised "from the ashes of Morocco" , formed by 5 members : Youssra Atmen (Lead Vocals), Ahmed Zine (Guitars, Songwriter) , Hassan Bourih (Synthesizers), Mounir Houaoura (Bass Guitar, Violin) and Samir Houaoura (Drums ).
After their 3rd album "Beyond Illusion" which is full of messages and some revolting expressions and which I call the awakening album, they're back with their 4th full length album "Saint dreamers" that holds 10 tracks + a cover.

The album is kinda a sequel to the previous one; there is of course some difference in terms of music as the band's philosophy has always been "explore and never repeat" but they maintained their originality and simplicity.

Many different kinds were played on this album like progressive symphonic, power, doom, atmospheric, gothic, folk, hard rock... What shows the different colors, topics and moods in it!

Starting by "wellhord" which is my favorite. Noticeable synths & orchestrations to express the lyrics, which are about the media and how it slaved our mental and killed the creative side of human. The second song, "Story end"  is the most "power" song in the album, a powerful orchestral intro , fast drum beats & some grunt to add more colors to the song. The lyrics are a 17th century operetta; the 3rd song "Deliver me" is a dramatic and atmospheric song full of sensations just before moving to the folkloric side of the band with "Fallen beauty". The African soul is obvious in this song showing how the band can easily move from kind to kind and theme to theme without exceeding their originality; The 5th song of the album is "Still in my mind" A dramatic modern rock song that deals with the loss of a parent; A relaxing moment with the instrumental remake of " Men on the earth", followed by "Tell me" a mix of gothic , doom and some jazz. The incredible voice of yousra revived it. Simple song, but magical! "Motherland" is a letter in its literary form as the band described it, a melancholic atmosphere carrying a meaningful message; here again we find some happiness with "Tonight" just after we find the cover of "One" by Metallica. I admit that this song has never been that atmospheric and sensual. Then comes the last song  "Heroes and poets",a theatrical atmosphere , magical in which you conclude your journey carrying with you some very beautiful melodies, a lot of hope and emotions.

ANALGESIA remind of NIGHTWISH in some ways, although they're unique enough to don't be compared...So if you're a fan of OLD Nightwish, this album is yours!

Vesperia - An Olden Tale~ Album review

This time, we're going to talk about some folk!
A band that knows what is really "FOLK METAL" ! It was formed by 4 talented and experienced men: Morgan Rider: (Vocals, Bass); Casey Elliott (Guitar); Frankie Caracci (Guitar) and last but not least Cory Hofing (Drums) in 2005. After their full-length album "Vinland" in 2011, they unleashed a new album entitled "AN OLDEN TALE".
It's VESPERIA an Epic Viking Metal band From Vinland... I mean Canada!

Starting with the title "AN OLDEN TALE", It's an intelligent title I would say! A title that attracts auditors, make them wonder about the album, without giving any sign about the tales told! It was the first thing that made me want to forthwith start listening to the album! It's a kind of suspense for tales lovers ;)

The album contains 9 songs (including the outro & a cover) that might please different tastes with its epic lead guitar and solos & amazing riffs accompanied with some symphonic and orchestral elements and folk and Celtic melodies! All that blend together to create an atmospheric and epic music that makes you feel and live every story and situation!
So as I said it might satisfies melodic death metal fans as well as folk or symphonic metal fans!
For the vocals, they used different types, melodic and brutal death metal vocals , clean vocals and of course some choir to express the sequence of events as the album talks about some  old battle and heroic tales to feel the depth of these lyrics!

In general An Olden Tale is a good album, we can obviously notice the band improving from a release to another and yeah, I know they won't stop enhancing their skills and that what makes me sure that the next release will be even better!

Anyway , if you're in the mood for some folk metal, and ready to travel over the centuries, then this band is for you and it's time to check "An Olden Tale"!!!

Excruciate 666 - Rites of torturers ~ Album review

Old school black metal in 2014? That's something really rare, maybe impossible, but Excruciate 666 proved us the opposite!

The band started in 1994 by MORGAVEN (bass, vocals) and BLASPHEMORT (guitars), then OSWALD (drums), and among their releases during these years: Dark Symphonies; Dawn Of Crucifixion; Riding Fire of Hate...

And in 2013 they come up with their latest album "Rites of torturers". The album contains 8 tracks, starting by "The Awakening Of The Tyrant" an old school black metal piece with Morgaven's violent screams and oswald's fast drums; the same thing applies to ''Sons Of Warfare'' & ''Warblood'', tracks that make you back in the time!

Some tracks from the albums have Thrash influence such as ''Sing Of Disaster', "Tramp To Slaughter", "Rites Of Tortures", ''A Call To Destruction'', Heavy and melodic riffs by Blasphemort, but there's always the blackened side and that show members capacities and how the band can acclimatize with any gender!

"Obscene Perversion In Genocide", the last song in the album, the heaviest as well, the black metal atmosphere is obvious here! The album in general is totally blackened, the atmosphere of war is mighty.. The lyric topics are generally about war, history and paganism!

SO, if you're into the true black metal, into bands like Mayhem or Darkthrone THIS ALBUM IS FOR YOU!!!

Check out the band here.

Interview with Frank from MaYaN

The dutch symphonic death metallers MAYAN are back with a 2nd album entitled "ANTAGONISE"!
Here's an interview with the guitarist Frank schiphorst about their latest release and their new line up!

Before we start talking about antagonise , let's talk a little bit about the new line up! Laura Macrì and Henning basse, new members in the band. what can you tell me about their joining and MaYan before and after it ?

On Quarterpast they were guests. We first wrote the music and then looked for suitable vocalists for certain parts on that album.
Now with Antagonise, with them being permanent members, we knew who we work with, so we wrote music with their voices in our minds as well. On Antagonise you hear a lot more Henning for instance, and more Laura. And now they came up with their own vocallines too, instead of us and the producer in the studio making up lines for them like on Quarterpast. Worked out great if you ask me :)

According to you , how important is the presentation of the female voice in the symphonic metal world?

Just as important as men. Should be no difference in importance. We love to use the female voice on certain parts to give it the atmosphere we have in mind. It's another instrument so to say. And a matter of taste. There's lots of great bands with just a female vocalist and lots of em with just male vocals but we like to use both to not be limited in what we do :)

ANTAGONISE, the 2nd album of the band! talk to me a bit about it!

Lots of fun to write and record. This time for Antagonise, Mark, Jack and I went for a better flow in the songs, and keep it a bit more metal as well. We were a bit more critical to eachother when writing together for it and we know eachother's style better now, and that worked out very efficienctly. Next to that our bassplayer Rob wrote a track (guitars+drums) as well at home, which became Bloodline Forfeit. On Quarterpast we used almost everything we wrote and were more experimental  in songwriting, so we had more hooks and 'technical' parts in our songs. With Antagonise we aimed for a better flow in the songs without doing concessions in what we love to play. So everything is still in there, but in a better way I think. The more you listen to the songs, the more you'll discover what's in there. With Quarterpast you discovered more of how the songs were built up/discover the logic behind the songs after more listening sessions, and with Antagonise it's the other way around. First songs, then discover all layers/technical stuff (being used in the most musical way ofcourse). For recording Quarterpast we went to the Gate Studios and recorded everything there, and for Antagonise we did everything in our homestudios except for the drums and guestvocals. That worked out much better as well for this Album, because you don't have the time pressure you get in an expensive studio, and we could record in the comfort of our own homes. This also worked for a better result. And worked very efficiently because we could record different instruments at the same time. When the drums were recorded in the studio Sandlane Recording Facilities), I got those tracks in my homestudio and recorded all guitars on them. The finished tracks I sent to the rest of the guys who recorded their parts in their homestudios. And when everything was finished we sent those tracks to Joost van den Broek, our producer for Antagonise, who re-amped the guitartracks in the studio and mixed the whole thing. All in all it took less time and we got a better result than the first album. Really happy how this worked out.

What's the story behind the title ?

Frank - Governments/worldleaders antagonizing their civilians, us 'normal' people, by corruption, lies, intimidation, spying etc...

What do the lyrics deal with?

Frank - The most obvious is the spying by our own governments which is all over the news now. And in the bigger whole all corruption and lies going on to keep us 'under control' and getting more power and money in the end. We are being lied to as in they tell us they protect us by the so called war on terrorism (is it really a war on terror? ;)), trying to gain our trust by misleading us. Just as big corporations 'giving' us things like social media but in the end just to use it for their own benefit by the information we give them without knowing. The whole album is about this fucked up world we live in.

What make ANTAGONISE different from QUARTERPAST?

The lyrics are more of the present as you see being revealed lately by people like snowden. And musicwise Antagonise has more of a flow in the music than Quarterpast, which was more experimental and more complicated listening. More 'sympho'/proggy as well. Antagonise is more metal (still with all technical/progressive stuff in there). For instance Jack now uses more in-your-face sounds like overdriven organs etc. as well.

"War on terror" was a successful video , are you guys thinking about making a video of one of antagonise tracks ?

Yes we're working very hard on trying to realise a new videoclip like we want it. So not just a simple band-in-a-hall video. It's hard to realise with the budget we have, so we are checking all extra possibilities next to that to make a new video at least as as good, and thought provoking and talked about as War on Terror. It is very important for us to show our message through our videoclips to make it stand out and make people think!

Let's talk a bit about Mayan's future. Tell me more about your upcoming shows and event and  the band's next step!

At this moment we are working on more shows here in Europe. We try to play at some summer festivals as well. Epica releases their new album in April so it's synchronizing our agenda's with Epica's to try to get the best out of it. January 30th and 31st we had our two album release shows which were awesome, we just got conformed for the Belgian PPM Fest in April, and soon more! And hopefully a good tour as well this year! That's the next step we're working on; more shows and the videoclip.

And in the end , do you have any message to you fans around here!

First of all we hope to visit you someday!! So go get our album Antagonise, and do let us know what you think! Thanks for all your support and see you on the road!

and thank you again for this interview!!

Thank you too!

Interview with Tobias " EX- Vomitory"

I'm so honored tonight to do an interview with a band that gave so much to death metal but after 24 years their existence they disbanded by the end of 2013! Yes folks, it's the Swedish death metal band VOMITORY talking about their disbanding and the band's path during all these years!

-Let's start from the beginning, talk to us about the band's path and its beginning

The band was started in October 1989 by guitarist Urban Gustafsson and bassist/vocalist Ronnie Olson. I joined on drums a couple of months later, since they couldn't find a suitable drummer. I was playing drums in another band at that time and I was supposed to only help them out at one show and until they found a new drummer. But apparently I remained in the band until the very end.

We started out like all other death metal bands in the beginning of the '90's - we did demos, played as many shows as we could and tried to get featured in as many fanzines as possible to spread our name. But we didn't really have any high ambitions back then. We just wanted to have a good time together, playing death metal and enjoying the underground scene with shows, fanzines etc. And that's basically how we lived our death metal lives until we got our first record deal, which resulted in our debut album "Raped In Their Own Blood" in 1996. During the first couple of years we expanded the line-up from a trio to a five piece, and we remained a five piece until the end of 1999. After the release of our debut album, we noticed a huge difference in the interest of our band. Soon we did our first tour in Europe, our second album "Redemption" was released, and by the end of 1999 we inked a deal with Metal Blade Records which we stayed with until the end.

-After 24 years of existence, many released albums, many achieved goal… Vomitory arrive to the end, how did you guys come up with the idea of disbanding? Was it planned before or did you just decide because of some factors maybe?

I think you answer much of the question yourself there - "24 years of existence, many released albums and achieved goals...". 24 years is a lot longer than most bands ever last, and being an active band for 24 years non-stop, and being the bands' driving force for most of that time, takes its toll of course. For me personally, this has been growing on me for a couple of years, so even if it was a very tough decision to make, it didn't come out of the blue. We simply came to a point where we didn't feel like moving on. There are a lot of different reasons for our decision. But what's most important is that it was a collective decision and it was not based on any disagreements or personal conflicts within the band. We are still good friends and that feels great!

-Did "vomitory" finish their mission? I mean did you achieve all your goals?

Yes, I think we finished it. We did the best death metal we could and enjoyed the fuck out of it for as long as it lasted. There are of course a lot of things that we want to have done but never did. Like touring the US and South America for example. But we're not bitter for that. We achieved a lot of things during the bands existence - things that we never expected. We are very humble in that sense. When we started the band we never even thought we would ever release an album.

-some members have changed over the years and of course they were and they're still part of VOMITORY family! What could you tell us about the former members?

I run into some of them every now and then, and it's great to have a chat with them. For example, Thomas (former bass player) lives in Gothenburg since many years, is happily married and works for Volvo Cars. He doesn't play in a band anymore though. Ronnie (ex vocals, founding member together with Urban) is doing vocals and bass in Turbocharged, and Jussi (ex-vocals) lives in Stockholm since a few years back and works at an oil rig in the north sea. I'm not sure if he's in a "serious" band these days, but I know for sure that he writes and records stuff at home. These three guys have all recently joined us on stage at different times playing a few songs with us, which was a total blast!

-what's your best memory from Vomitory?

That we stayed true to ourselves, both musically and everything else that being in a band involves. We did things the way we wanted and didn't care too much about what the scene looked like at the moment. Also, that we got signed to one of the most classical metal labels, Metal Blade Records, and got to tour with the many of the biggest names in death metal - Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Vader, Nile, Amon Amarth, Malevolent Creation, Hypocrisy etc.

-what advice would you give to the new death metal bands?

Believe in what you're doing. If you let the current trend guide your musical direction, you will lose all your credibility eventually. Don't believe you're a rockstar, because you are not. Be humble towards other bands, because they probably work just as hard - or even harder - than you and your band do. Stay off drugs and don't text while driving. And don't forget to have fun!

-And in the end, would you like to say something to your fans about their love and support during these years?

Thank you very much for your support and dedication! It means everything to us!!
 Keep supporting death metal!

LABYRINTH : THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR!

Just like I expected, Fleshgod apocalypse’s LABYRINTH did it again by 17 out of 38 votes (44%)! A lot to say about this album but I'll talk briefly about it...

I still get the same feeling as the first day when I listened to it! Once I click on play TARAA I'm in Knossos inside a labyrinth, hearing the sound of pain, sorrow, death and revenge in every verse I read and in every pray he prayed. The lyrics are so emotional and so strong, full of sentiments, suffering and pain; as much as Tommaso attract us with his voice, Francesco Paoli excite us with the drums; Cristiano and Paolo played an important role as well; when the riffs and the solos embrace the orchestra then something really epic and atmospheric is born! We can obviously taste the tech death!! And after all this war and brutality, after screaming & revenging, the master of keyboard Francesco Ferrini concludes the album by an instrumental masterpiece entitled Labyrinth which it really blows the mind!
The album in general is well worked, what I like the most about FA is that they're so unique and original!

I think that's all, I don't have anything else to add, I'll just suggest you the album if you didn't get it yet and if you're looking for some good symphonic technical death Metal!

Interview with Ariën from "Epica"

First of all I want to thank you for this chance!

Ariën; You're welcome!

-Let's start by Retrospect, Epica anniversary show with a 70-piece orchestra, choirs, international guests and many special effects talk to me more about this event!

Ariën; It was a very special project for us, and a true highlight in our 10-years-time.

We organized an extra big show at the 'Klokgebouw' in Eindhoven (the Netherlands), a big concert-hall with a capacity of 4500 people.

We had a great time preparing for this event, which was a huge deal of work though, but definitely worth it!

It was great fun to work with the Miscolcj orchestra again, with whom we worked with in 2008 during the Classical Conspiracy-project.

It all slowly came together during the days prior to the show, and it was very cool to see how everything fell into place during the rehearsals, up to the point of the show itself. It was a huge thrill for us to play such a show, with a full orchestra, choir, pyro-effects, acrobats... and for such an amazing crowd!!

We wanted to celebrate this event with our fans in a way that it would leave an extra big impression to everybody who was there, and

for everybody who's going to see the blu-ray and DVD. I think we got to a milestone in our career with Retrospect.

-After Retrospect movie theater premier in many places, it's officially out on November 26, Are you satisfied with the feedback so far?

Ariën; We got a lot of positive reviews, and all our fans are very happy with the outcome of the live-recordings!!

I'm very satisfied with the feedback and reactions so far!

-As a special guest there were Ad Sluijter,Yves Huts and Jeroen Simons, how these people affected positively on Epica's path and participated in achieving what the band is now?

Ariën; I think that they are happy for us and how we got to the point that we are now.

They had a lot of fun to be on stage again and play a song with their old bandmates.

It was cool and I think they're proud as well to have been part of Epica for such a long time.

-Do you think Epica changed after these 10 years?

Ariën; Yes, I do, especially musically and professionally we grew a lot.

We've been touring a lot lately, and every time we are on stage, we grow in experience and performance.

And throughout the years we learned from things we maybe should have done differently.

-How do you see the band in another 10 years from now?

Ariën; Still alive, healthy, touring, having fun in doing what we do.

-Does "Epica" still have goals to achieve?

Ariën; it would be awesome to do an arena-tour!!
Bigger crowds, more energy - everything to a higher plan.

-Let’s talk a bit about the future, can you tell me more about your upcoming events?

Ariën; We'll be touring and promoting our new upcoming album. We'll start playing festivals first next year, then we'll be touring North-, Central-, and South-America, Europe, and for the rest we'll be planning to do more.

- You’re now recording a new album, can you tell us a bit about it and its release?

Ariën; I can't tell too much about it, except that it's going to be a beautifully brutal crystal-clear heavy album!!

Lot of catchy songs to bang your head off!!

-And in the end, the question that has been asked by all your fans here: are you planning in playing any show in Morocco?

Ariën; We don't have anything planned in Morocco so far, but who knows; I'd be up to it for sure!
